Zhou has often been labeled a ‘Buddhist’ poet, but his poems cannot be read simplistically as restatements of traditional religious notions. They convey a modern and transcultural sense of adventurous and ecstatic personal discovery in which sensual reality, dreams, and spirituality all play their part. This many-sidedness may be what has won such a wide audience for Zhou Mengdie in the Far East. His poetry is intellectual yet anti-intellectual, bookish yet book-parodying. It is transcendent yet glories in the beauties of earth. There is something in it for the scholar who craves details, but also for the casual reader who dips into an anthology for a moment of refreshment. The sense of an ever-evolving personal consciousness is evoked by the poems in which Zhou stresses that the self or subject is not just a passive endurer of its world but a co-creator of it. This selection includes many of Zhou’s best-loved poems but also some which the translator has found personally meaningful or especially challenging to translate. The book begins with a foreword by Lloyd Haft detailing his approach to translation and the history of his own involvement with Zhou Mengdie which goes back more than half a century.
